Krisann Corcoran "Under The Bridge"

Lyrics

Under the bridge at the bend in the river
She shivers beneath her old cardigan sweater.
Her tired old bicycle worn to the rims
Has a lop-sided basket that’s filled to the brim with the treasures she calls home.

She has a favorite red and green canister
That she puts a stone in at sunrise each day.
And sometimes she pours them all out on the ground
And one by one counts them to see how old she’s become.

Helen Louise had a music box that she would play when she was little.
It drowned out the voices inside her head, she heard instead the rhythms of the river.

You may have seen her out pushing her bicycle.
Her eyes give her trouble, she stares straight ahead.
Even in summer she wears her wool sweater.
She thinks that the warmth will stay with her under the bridge.

Helen Louise earned a high school degree.
She could be anything she wants, that’s what they’d say.
But she collects tin cans for nickels a day,
And she never spends them, just squirrels them away.

Nobody noticed when Helen Louise
Wasn’t seen on the street for a week, maybe two.
A rusty old bike was seen under the bushes
Its lopsided basket completely hidden from view.

A red and green canister filled up with nickels
Was found at the mission near the bend in the river.
And under the bridge stones were piled into mounds.
It seemed as though Helen had finally found her way home.

Helen Louise had a music box that she would play when she was little.
It drowned out the voices inside her head, she heard instead the rhythms of the river.
